iJam is a community of practice (CoP) which was formed at CHIJ Primary Toa Payoh in 2013 because of a common interest in learning about and in playing the ukulele. Through consistent practice and shared experiences, the teachers and students were able to learn from one another, hence allowing both professional and personal development to be consistently encouraged. iJam consists of a total of 15 pupils from Primary 4 to Primary 6, 18 teachers and the Principal.
The pupils at iJam consists of self-directed learners who have chosen to attend the lessons twice a week during the Recess Arts Programme. They opted to learn a new instrument when the Ukelele Module was first offered , hence, demonstrating qualities of self-initiated learners.
The team at iJam was put together by teachers from different fields of specialization. The Principal of the school, an avid guitarist, has been constantly lending her support for this initiative. Music teachers at CHIJ Primary Toa Payoh, as well as two music teachers from CHIJ Our Lady Queen of Peace, have also played a large role in helping to anchor this CoP.
On the 18th of May 2013, iJam performed for the first time at the Ukulele Fiesta @ CHIJMES. They were able to engage the community through their performances and also inspired many individuals to learn more about this simple yet endearing instrument. iJam will also be performing at the CHIJ Primary Toa Payoh’s school musical, School Daze, at the end of this year.
