On 10th of November 2012, Broadrick Secondary embarked on a journey to present their inaugural musical showcase, ‘Remember Katong’ at the Nanyang Polytechnic Auditorium. All the Performing Arts CCA groups (Concert Band, Modern Dance, Malay Dance, Drama and Chinese Orchestra), Taekwando, Shooting Club, Library Club, Girl Guides, Media Club and AV Club were involved in the production of the musical showcase. The Parent Support Group (PSG) and the teachers had also put up dance and song performances on stage. Some alumni students also participated in the performance.
The musical showcase was inspired by the rich history and heritage of the Katong area and its people. At the same time, the musical was aimed to educate students regarding the rich stories of Singapore’s history from the 60s, as part of the school’s National Education efforts.
The school’s Parent Support Group (PSG) was actively involved in the showcase, they performed a dance segment and contributed in the make-up and costume departments. The enthusiasm of the PSG members was heart-warming and encouraging; they practised even on weekends in the Music Room and were present for all rehearsals. Parents, students and teachers bonded over the excitement and closer ties were forged.
In collaboration with the musical showcase, the Humanities department also organised a Learning Journey, ‘Katong Trail’, for the Secondary One students. Snippets of the musical showcase, interesting information on the Peranakan culture and the history of Katong were also presented at the school’s morning assemblies.
Through this journey, students have exemplified the school’s values and form closer relationships with their teachers, parents, coaches and school leaders.
